The big news this month is the complete redesign of www.ergonomics.co.uk after several months of research, planning and development. The crisp, modern look includes much more information than before with each product page divided by tabs for Description, Features and Specification. This has been an enormous task and is ongoing. We have started with our best-selling sections and will roll out the same format for all products as fast as possible. In due course, we shall also be adding product reviews and more videos. Any feedback about the new design will be most welcome: please email us. BS EN 1335-1:2000 - Part 1 - A standard for measuring office work chairs

You may be thinking that this is a topic just for ergo-nerds but the dimensional differences between chairs are particularly important when specifying for individuals with musculo-skeletal problems. Although this Standard has been around for years, the information provided by manufacturers and dealers has been quite inconsistent. In the process of preparing the new web site, we have therefore worked hard to ensure that our data is now directly comparable between manufacturers and models. As well as including the information at www.ergonomics.co.uk, we have also decided to make it our Webinar topic for August. Please click here for dates and further information.

DXT Precision Mouse I know I keep on about this product but we are genuinely excited about its potential and it’s now in stock! As well as for our principal commercial market, we see it as an ideal home mouse for the whole family. It can be used left- or right-handed and, because of the unique way it is held, it fits most adults and children. Numbers Game Has anyone else noticed that the new registration numbers available from September 1st offer lots of potential for “ER60/ERGO” combinations? Having purchased my own number for £10 in 1975, I’m probably disproportionately interested in such matters but, in case you’re curious, ER60 NOM is no longer available – we have bought it! For other ideas, click here. Lisa’s Baby Many readers will have dealt with Lisa King in Customer Service before she left in June to have a baby. I am delighted to report that Joshua Anthony arrived safely on Saturday July 24th.
 Best Wishes

Smart Sleeve & Smart Shell We’ve been working with Ergonomic Café since their first product, the Lapsuite. Their imaginative products have evolved significantly over the years and the two latest models are stylish and clever as well as functionally and ergonomically sound. Still images don’t do these products justice so please view the animations on our product pages for Smart Shell and Smart Sleeve to appreciate how they work. It’s interesting to think back to the original Lapsuite: that was also an integrated laptop case and stand but these latest models are “light years” ahead of that design! DXT Precision Mouse Update Our unique new mouse
has been delayed slightly but we now have a confirmed shipping date from the factory so, subject to
Customs clearance, we shall be able to despatch in quantity within the
next few weeks. In the meantime, it has gained CE and FCC approvals and
user trial responses have been even better than we expected. During the
extended trials, we have discovered further benefits that we hadn’t
anticipated: since it’s both right- and left-handed and fits most hand
sizes, it makes an ideal “home mouse” for use by the whole family. We
have also discovered that many people find it easy to use with both
hands - it’s much more intuitive than a standard mouse. We have updated
our web page
with new product images and you can also download the instructions. If you’re an Access to Work assessor, we would really like to lend you a DXT to review. To start this process, please complete our online form. Government Department Productivity As the Government talks about ever deeper cuts into public sector expenditure, it’s a good time to discuss productivity improvement. We have a number of programmes and ideas to improve performance and reduce absenteeism. Of course, these apply just as much to commercial organisations. This really is the time to be talking about “working smarter not harder” - and we’re the people to be talking to! Email the Customer Service team or call 0845 345 0898 for further information. Health & Safety Exhibition for Office Workers We stopped exhibiting at the Safety & Health Expo a couple of years ago because it has become almost exclusively industrial. We continue to take part in several conferences but there doesn’t seem to be any major exhibition that focuses on Workplace Ergonomics, Health & Safety and Productivity. The closest is Health & Wellbeing but that’s much more about Occupational Health. Am I missing something or is there a gap in the market? I would love to hear from you if you have any thoughts on this matter (from either the visitor or exhibitor perspective). You don’t have to be mad to work here but…! Following our July Training Day, several members of the team and various family members spent the evening Zorbing. If you’re not familiar with this activity, it involves rolling head-over-heals down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball that looks like something out of “The Prisoner” (the cult 1960s TV series). Curious? Take a look at our YouTube video! New Faces Kerry Pearson is our new Regional Account Manager, based out of Milton Keynes. Kerry has recently graduated in Interior Architecture. Matt Heuze, who joins us on a 13 month placement, is taking a year out of his Business IT degree to help us develop our web-related activities. Webinars It’s a while since I “plugged” these and 100% of participants who have completed our feedback survey want to do more! If you’re still a “Webinar Virgin”, you can be reassured that they are really easy to join and a very efficient use of your time. This month’s topic is “Biomechanics & Office Seating”. You can book one of the sessions here. We are also starting to offer bespoke corporate webinars and these offer an excellent method of communicating with your whole team (nationally or internationally). Please contact your Account Manager or the Customer Service team (0845 345 0898) for further information. With the World Cup over, I hope the remainder of your summer is vuvuzela-free.
 Best Wishes

With pundits everywhere telling us to expect a few hard years in all sectors, and nobody knowing quite what the budget will bring, we think it’s time to take a long, hard look at business relationships. We are pretty happy with how business is going at the moment but we take nothing for granted. Whatever happens to the economy, we are all in this together so, to optimise our opportunities, it’s important to have strong, open, collaborative commercial partnerships. Retirement, emigration or death seem the only other options at the moment – and I think at least one of these is a little extreme! I have recently been asking business partners to tell us how they feel about our relationship and we are very proud of the responses. You can see an abridged list of answers here or, if you’re a LinkedIn user, you can see full responses on my profile here. I know that many people who read this are not yet customers. If you’re one of those people, I ask you to think about whether you can be as enthusiastic about your own supplier: if not, please contact us to start a dialogue. If you are already one of our satisfied customers, please give your feedback to the Customer Service team (we run a rewards scheme for individual staff excellence). And, if you’re a customer but you don’t think you’re getting outstanding service right now (we know we’re not perfect), please contact me directly and I will see what I can do to put it right. Together everyone achieves more – cliché but true! Flags & Footy I’m not a soccer enthusiast so I genuinely thought our local garage had over-stocked for St George’s Day when I saw their display of flags, stickers, T-shirts, badges and other tasteful and sophisticated regalia the other day. It turns out the World Cup is about to start and I know this is an event that transforms normally sane and impartial individuals into obsessive footy fans. Our friends at RH Chairs recognise this and, if you order promptly, you can have an RH “England” chair (at a special discount) that enables a real fan to enjoy the final in real comfort. Click here for full details. Alternatively, if you are looking for an excellent chair but you’re not too sure about the flag upholstery, contact the Customer Service team for special World Cup deals on RH chairs in “normal” fabrics. (Surprisingly, the guys at RH regard me as a bit of a soccer “lost cause” so they have even sent me this link to the match schedule). Another 10 Years This month, another member of our team celebrates a decade with the company. Mark Glew is our Warehouse Supervisor and also takes responsibility for much of our Environmental Programme. As well as overseeing goods in and out of the warehouse, he has made significant inroads into minimising our waste of packaging materials, transport, gas and electricity. In recognition of his service with us, he gets an extra week’s holiday this year. Coming Soon We are working on a new interface for Access to Work assessors. We are piloting what looks like an excellent new software product and production is running pretty much on schedule for the DXT Precision Mouse. More news will follow over the next few months.
 Best Wishes

Guy Osmond Managing Director P.S. Thanks to all those who took part in our survey last month. The winner was Lorna Taylor.

Clean-Doc 440 This unique copy holder improves document management, increases available desk space and makes life easier for your cleaners! Attaching to any LCD monitor arm, it can be switched instantly between the sloping “document mode” and horizontal “shelf mode”. For organisations operating a Clean Desk Policy, this is the easiest way to ensure a completely clean desk at the end of the day but it is equally useful during the day to make lots of desk space when users need to review papers or documents. Click here for more information or here for our animated overview. Conferences The first flurry of 2010 conferences is now over and it has been good to see so many old friends and meet new ones. Particularly satisfying has been the initial response to the new DXT Precision Mouse. The next events are at the end of June. Click here for details. (Although we don’t exhibit any more, I am visiting Safety & Health Expo on Wednesday May 12th and shall be happy to meet you for a coffee if you call the office to arrange a time). Webinars We have now confirmed the programme for May, June and July. May is a “recap” month so we are rerunning the last three topics again: New Products for 2010 (updated); Free Online Resources and Mouse Use: New Ideas from Old Research. Click here to see the programme and make your reservation. Bigger and Bigger! You may well have spoken to Lisa King on the telephone or exchanged emails. As one of the Customer Service team, she deals with phone, fax, post and email messages, quotation requests and general queries. She also updates the catalogue and our web sites, looks after our search engine optimisation and manages our eBay sales. Despite this workload, she has still managed to find time to get pregnant! She leaves us in June but, in the meantime, we have added further to her responsibilities by asking her to test several of our products for the “pregnant woman’s view” about their suitability. Good, bad or indifferent? Tell us more for a chance to win a new DXT Precision Mouse This is my sixth eBulletin and, although it continues to evolve, it’s hard to be sure if I’m going in the right direction. Please help by clicking here and completing our short questionnaire. At the end of the questionnaire, there is a link to a draw entry form: complete this for a chance to win one of ten DXT Precision Mouse prizes when production becomes available in June. Feel free to be honest: the survey is anonymous and the draw entries are not linked so you can be as critical as you wish! The draw will take place on May 31st and winners will be notified immediately afterwards. And finally … This has nothing to do with ergonomics but my recent 8 hour drive from the ACPOHE conference to my home was brightened by this signwritten message on the back of a van: “Is this vehicle driven well? If so, please call my mum (she worries)”. Best Wishes

DXT Precision Mouse – World Launch - Tuesday April 13, 2010 Any new product is potentially exciting but, when it's the culmination of a long period of research and development, it is especially satisfying. Back in 2008, I was first shown a “lump of wood” (the first rough-hewn prototype) by Jim Bowden MCSP MSOM, the inventor. His idea for a very different sort of mouse was based originally on definitive medical research by orthopaedic surgeon Professor John Russell Napier. Things had already started to gain momentum when he approached me with the concept and, through his commitment and energy, the DXT is now ready for market. For the full design background, you can click here to book one of our webinars. Key features are: High quality, high performance, high accuracy mouse Unique design Can be used right- or left-handed (instantly switchable) Fits most hand sizes The world’s most compact “ergo” mouse (ideal for laptop users)To view the video, select HiRes (better quality) or LoRes (quicker download) or visit our web shop for details of our introductory offer. We are demonstrating the DXT at all the upcoming conferences and full production will be available from June 2010. ebay-nanza Our financial year ends on May 31st so we have started our year-end “clear out”. Keep an eye on our ebay site over the next few weeks as we sell ex-demo products, assessment samples and surplus stock as well as computer and comms items that we are no longer using. Every auction has a low starting price and no reserve so there will be some real bargains. Even though the prices are so low, ebay customers get our usual awesome customer service: one of the reasons we have 100% positive feedback. Our ebay site is always accessible from the Special Offers link on our home page at www.ergonomics.co.uk - or you can click here to go directly to it. From Pubs & Pool to Posture Products Following the retirement of Ron Foster, our long-serving Logistics Manager, I am pleased to welcome Steve Gilday who has taken over the role. Steve has a varied CV, including time as a pub landlord, pool & snooker club manager, electronic circuit tester and draughtsman. We are not sure quite how he will use his crowd-control experience when dealing with suppliers but I am looking forward to finding out! Hair today - Gone tomorrow Also new to the Logistics team is Richard Lane who had not cut his hair for ten years before he joined us (neither had Steve but for quite different reasons!). As well as the new job and a new flat, Richard decided a new hairstyle was called for. Several friends and colleagues have sponsored him and, so far, he has raised nearly £300 for a local Macmillan Palliative Care charity. To find out more (and maybe even sponsor him!), click here. Election Fever With a General Election less than a month away, you are probably either energised by the political news or bored to death already! Whatever the outcome, our own manifesto doesn’t waiver: we shall remain “the UK's most innovative supplier of products and services to improve workplace ergonomics”. Best Wishes

Forthcoming Events It's Conference time of year and we have our usual schedule, with one important addition. For the first time in a while, we shall be at the Physio First conference where we shall be celebrating and promoting our new range of services for Physio First members. Our regular events include the Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors (formerly the Ergonomics Soc.), where I am also presenting one of the papers, followed by ACPOHE and NADP. After missing a couple of years, we also return to National Back Exchange in September. Preferring the more intimate conference format, we are putting all our energy into these rather than the bigger NEC events but I shall be visiting Health & Wellbeing at Work on Wednesday March 10th and Safety & Health Expo on Wednesday May 12th – contact me directly or through the office if you want to meet up for a coffee and/or a chat! You can find details, dates and venues for these events by clicking here. Solari Petite We have an ongoing demand for good office seating for those who find mainstream chairs too big. When we came to review this issue recently, we looked around and found what we needed right under our nose! With over 6,000 units sold, our exclusive Solari chair is a proven and established product. We have therefore developed a petite variant, offering a high specification at a reasonable price. For further details, click here. Web Portal As well as our established catalogue/ecommerce site at www.ergonomics.co.uk, we have an extensive portfolio of other sites and resources. Recently, we have redesigned our web portal at www.osmondgroup.co.uk to provide a central resource to find them all. Don’t forget, we also make it easy for you to contact us! Click here for all the choices, including an online form for us to call you back at a specific time. Ron Retires After over 12 years with the company, Ron Foster, our Logistics Manager, is finally hanging up his keys at the end of March to start his well-earned retirement. Ron is responsible for all products into and out of our warehouse and, as such, is probably best known to our suppliers, who all hold him in high esteem. “I am looking forward to quality time with my wife, children and grandchildren”, he says, “as well as much more golfing, walking and holidays in the sun!” Watch this Space! We are almost ready to launch a brand new computer mouse, designed by a UK physiotherapist/ergonomist. Suitable for left- and right-handed users, it will be the focus product in next month’s eBulletin. In the meantime, watch out for sneak previews on our Facebook and Twitter pages (links below). I hope to meet up with you in person at one of the forthcoming events or “virtually” at one of our regular webinars. Best Wishes

Trail-Blazing Saddles There has been a sudden burst of activity in saddle seat design and I have looked at three different models from three different manufacturers in the last couple of weeks. One is for general use, one for sit-stand desk users and the third is a prototype designed originally for a medical application (but with many more potential uses). We are currently assessing these and more news will follow shortly. Click here for our existing range. As you can also see from the header image, the new Contour Roller Mouse Pro 2 is imminent and will be available in March. The market leader has been updated for use both with mini keyboards (without numeric keypads) and the thinner keyboard designs now becoming common. Click on the image or here for more information. Free Online Training The initial response to our webinar programme has been even better than expected, with one substantial employer using them to update 15 staff based at locations across the country. If this idea appeals to you, we are happy to integrate your personnel into our ongoing programme or run an exclusive session for you. Click here to find out more and see our current schedule or contact me (details below) about exclusive and/or bespoke facilities. There are still a few spaces in February and our March programme introduces a comprehensive range of free online resources. Voucher Codes Our Voucher Code system enables clients and customers of Ergonomics, Health & Safety and Medical Professionals to benefit from a referral discount. We now have a version of our proven A4 Posture Guide with integrated Voucher Code details. Please contact the Customer Service team on 0845 345 0898 or info@ergonomics.co.uk for further information. Big Screen Stars With ever-larger monitors becoming available at ever-lower prices, we are moving on from dual screen use in the office. The Customer Service team has been the first department to implement large-format screens and initial user feedback has been excellent. Jennie Pease (pictured) says “Having more than one programme visible simultaneously saves lots of time. Working with spreadsheets is particularly good because I can see so much more information on screen without scrolling”. As always, there is plenty happening and more products in the pipeline so please check out our Facebook or Twitter pages for more frequent updates. We are also starting to add YouTube videos but it’s “early days” at the moment – more info next month! Best Wishes

Happy New Year! As parts of the country continue to suffer weather-induced mayhem, it’s great to have a reliable way to keep in touch. So far, we have not been affected very much in our little corner of Dorset so, if you are one of the customers whose meeting we have had to reschedule, we are “raring to go” as soon as the weather in your area improves and we can get to you. Go with the Flo We have now added Flo (from Active Ergonomics) to our product range. Available in three back heights with a high standard specification, this is a quality chair, designed and manufactured in the UK and with a good environmental story. Click here for more online details about the product or click here to download a brochure. Warranty Extension On the subject of quality seating with a good environmental story, all mainstream RH Form chairs purchased after 01.02.2010 will have a 10 year warranty. Click here to look at the range online. Webinars – Dreadful Name, Brilliant Concept! Our latest service - available without charge to all customers and contacts - is our regular webinar (online seminar) portfolio. This will evolve over the coming months as we identify what customers are looking for and how best to meet your information needs. To get things moving, we shall be running a Product Update webinar four times in February. The content will be fundamentally the same for each but it will be offered on different days and at different times (including a couple of evening sessions). I shall be presenting each “live” session myself and the focus will be very much on raising your knowledge and awareness of the latest products available. It will definitely not be a selling session! For dates, times, further information (including what a webinar is) and our online booking form, please click here. Networking We have just launched our Facebook page and Twitter account. I shall use these to offer more frequent bulletins (probably once or twice a week) offering all sorts of useful links and information across a broad range of topics and interests – not just about Ergonomics and Health & Safety (and definitely not simply a load of sales promotion messages!). To see our posts so far and become a fan/follower, please click on the appropriate icon. Time Flies When You’re Having Fun! Steve Douglas, our Group Finance Manager and official “backroom boy” celebrates his 10th anniversary with us this month. He manages the financial analysis and reporting for both Osmond Group and MSA Manufacturing (its subsidiary) and always has a cheery smile and a view on the Chancellor’s latest scheme! He gets an extra week’s paid leave in his tenth year and will be using part of this time to pursue his interest in history and historical artefacts (he hopes to come across an abacus even older than the one he uses at work). With Best Wishes for a Healthy & Prosperous 2010.
