GO FOR GREEN – Protect the Environment The plastic cups currently being used for our water dispenser are non-recyclable and we would like to do our bit for the planet. Starting in September we will provide water bottles for our members to buy for a small fee. These can be washed after use and brought in every time to save the use and consequent disposal of the plastic cups (and you’ll receive a decent measure of water too!) Members are also welcome to provide their own bottle. We will hold a small stock of washable plastic cups for those who forget to bring their bottle! Thank you for your help in this. STAY HYDRATED Keep the fluids coming! Dehydration causes the body to hoard water, which can cause the body to carry up to 4 excess pounds around the mid-section. Try to drink 6-8 8oz glasses of water (1 ½ litres) of water or other fluids a day, especially when exercising. Unsweetened tea also counts towards your water needs but not coffee as it is a diuretic. WEIGHT-LOSS TIP THAT REALLY HOLDS WATER Forget expensive pills and potions - one of the secrets to losing weight could simply be a glass of water. Dieters who down 2 glasses of water before each meal shed more pounds than those who only count calories (and do their Curves workout!), a study shows. While prescription-only weight-loss drugs (not that we recommend drugs to lose weight of course) cut the body’s ability to absorb fat or tinker with the brain’s chemistry, water simply fills up the stomach, is calorie-free, readily available and costs nothing. The American researchers compared weight loss among dieters who drank just under a pint of water before each meal with those who simply watched what they ate. Over 3 months, the water drinkers each lost an average of 15.5lb, 5lb more than the non-water-drinkers. DANGERS OF ASPARTAME (forwarded by Gosport member, Liz Almond) Diet Soda Increases Hunger and Leads to Weight Gain - Tracy Rose Drinking Diet Soda Leads to Weight Gain - Jonathan King Aspartame is a sugar substitute with a host of side effects. Drinking diet soda that contains aspartame actually increases cravings and prevents weight loss. Many people turn to diet soda as part of their weight loss plan. Dieters often rely on artificial sweeteners for a sugar substitute. The idea behind it is to avoid taking in the 10 teaspoons of sugar in each can of regular soda and cut back on calories to lose weight. While cutting back on calories does lead to weight loss, drinking diet soda that contains aspartame actually leads to weight gain! Aspartame, the artificial sweetener found in diet soda makes the body crave more calories. It can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and prevent weight loss. While it's true that diet soda doesn't have any calories, it signals your brain to expect the calories. When you eat or drink things without calories your body continues to look for the calories. Your brain receives the message that you aren't full yet. It increases your hunger and leads you to continue to crave foods and eat more. Diet soda drinkers actually tend to gain weight. Soda Drinkers Don't Get Enough Nutrients One problem that frequently occurs when people drink too much soda is that they miss out on other drinks that provide important nutrients. Water is important for flushing your system and staying hydrated. Drinking skimmed or reduced fat milk, juice or green tea provide the body with nutrients it needs, whereas sodas don't have any nutritional value. Side Effects of Aspartame Aside from weight gain, there are a host of other side effects caused by consuming aspartame. Most side effects aren't reported because they aren't associated with the consumption of aspartame. Drinking diet soda, however, can lead to: dizziness, memory loss, headaches, mood swings, irritability, anxiety, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, insomnia, skin irritations, menstrual irregularities, fibromyalgia, numbness and cramps.

I saw Curves when it first opened but I put it off; then I decided to start in September when I got back from holiday. I needed to trim up and lose weight. Curves is not like a gym; it’s more personal, only 30 minutes which is really, really easy to fit in. You are on each machine for a very short time which most people can do. It’s full of ‘normal’ people, not flashy gym bunnies or people just trying to showing off! I have lost weight, I feel much better like I’ve really done something. It starts my day off really well and I do twice as much as what I would normally. I feel a bit embarassed amongst people I don’t know but I feel ok at Curves now. Kim is our overall No. 5 TOP STAR ACHIEVER since we started in 2007 and is proof of what a little bit of perseverance can do! Since she joined, Kim has completed 300 workouts, lost 2 stone, 27.5 inches and a staggering 6.8% Body Fat and 21 pounds actual weight in body fat (that’s 9 bags of sugar, girls!)

Club Fun – Back To School, Back to You! We will be running the “Back to School – Back to You” promotion in the club starting 6th September. This encourages our members to continue their Curves Workouts, get back into a routine and spend some well deserved time on themselves. The promotion lasts four weeks and each member gets a ‘report card’ to track their progress. This is a lot of fun and the staff will be dressing up to get in the school spirit. We might think about getting out the cane out if you don’t spend enough time on yourself! And of course, as with all Curves promotions, we will be giving away lots of Curves prizes, so get your thinking cap on and make the right choice!
Heads Up for October October is of course our Breast Cancer Awareness month and we will be running our enormously popular raffle. If you would like to donate a prize or have your own business that would like to donate something, please let us know as soon as possible. Your business card or logo would be useful to advertise your business name on the prize display table which will be in the club all month. We will probably organise a ‘Ladies Night’ during October which is usually an evening of girlie fun & retail therapy, so watch the space in the club for details. I passed Curves loads of times but then I made the decision to lose weight at Slimming World and knew I needed to be more active. I joined Curves because it’s only a 30 min workout. Curves is not boring and you’re not left on your own. There are lots of different initiatives, games etc. and regular weigh & measure. You get to know everyone and Curves SMART keeps you competing with yourself. I’m really competitive so that keeps me engaged. I am fitter, thinner and feel more steady. My spatial awareness has improved and I have more confidence. I would never have believed I would come to the gym 5 times a week! If I can’t come I get frustrated. I had to overcome the fear of coming in and people’s reaction to my size and feeling watched. I get really hot & sweaty which makes me feel self-conscious. Finding time in the day was difficult so I plan the meal in the evening to allow time to workout and set the expectation with my family on home time. Trudy is our overall TOP ACHIEVER since Sep 2009 and has lost 3 st, 11lb; 45.75in; 4.9% body fat and dropped 4 Dress Sizes from 26 to 18/20.

Club Fun – 30 Day Challenge We have challenged all our members to work out 3 times a week for the month of July and also win extra points for other actions for the chance to win ‘Curves’ logo goodies at the end and in weekly prize draws. We’ve had a really good sign-up and Wendy Sumner, Jo Hudd, Wendy Lydiatt and Debra Jamieson-Hesk have been our lucky Week 1 & 2 winners. Club Activities – Aerobic Moves for your Summer bikini bod Our aerobic board moves for this month are focussed on achieving that tight, toned body ready for showing off the bikini/swimsuit on the beach or on holiday. Our aerobic moves at 9:45 every day mostly led by Michelle have proved very popular too! So if you’ve been slacking off a bit lately, come on in and get a slice of the action! Health & Nutrition Facts You probably know that calcium is food for your bones, but did you know that calcium can also be good for your waistline? Recent research by Michael Zemel, PhD, at the University of Tennessee has linke a high calcium intake to increased fat loss and optimal body composition. If the body has adequate calcium, then the breakdown of fat is encouraged, however, if the body lacks calcium then it will store fat. Calcium is also important during weight loss and strength training to protect bone. To maximise your calcium intake why not bone-up with our high grade Lamberts calcium supplement sold in the club. Get life in balance Rebecca McQuillan 21 Jun 2010 Falling is just one of those things that happen when you get older, right? After a certain age, you just have to take it easy, avoid pushing yourself and certainly not do anything too physically challenging. Wrong, wrong and wrong. “You don’t just fall because you’re old,” says Joyce Brennan, who should know. The 74-year-old from Perth, who used to run a guest house, fell eight times and sustained a bruised, blackened face and a badly smashed wrist, before an investigation revealed that medication she was taking for nerve pain in her back was causing balance problems. She stopped the medication and although she has tripped a few times since, has never had another serious fall. Alcohol, bad eyesight and ill-fitting footwear can all cause people to fall and should be checked out. Taking physical exercise, however, is the best way to ensure you live to an active old age without finding yourself face to face with the floor. This is because many falls are caused by poor strength and balance. Dr Dawn Skelton, reader in ageing and health at Glasgow Caledonian University, is the UK’s leading authority on falls prevention in older people. She has written a major government report on the subject, and to mark Falls Prevention Week this week, run by Age UK, she offers her advice on exercises to prevent falls. Anyone can fall, but the risk factors increase with age. According to Age UK, certain tailored programmes for strength and balance have been shown to reduce the risk of falls by as much as 60 per cent. Those who want to prevent their first fall should concentrate on improving their strength and balance. That means stepping outside your exercise comfort zone. “You need to feel that you are challenging your own sense of balance, almost to the point you are having trouble staying upright,” says Dr Skelton. Exercises that don’t improve balance include using a static bike in the gym and even swimming, because your core body remains stable. Walking is good for cardiovascular fitness, but unless it’s over uneven ground, isn’t going to promote better balance. “It won’t do you any harm at all to walk to your dance class, but it’s the dance class that will keep you upright,” says Dr Skelton. “To improve balance, your body has to think ‘I’m not doing very well, I have to do better’.” Dr Skelton recommends activities to improve balance twice a week and to improve strength twice a week. Muscle strength declines naturally with age, but physical inactivity can greatly accelerate the process. In preventing falls, lower limb muscles, including the quadriceps, ankle and hip muscles, need attention. Preventing falls, though, takes effort. “This isn’t something that’s going to improve overnight. You have to keep progressing the challenge,” says Dr Skelton. “You have to do the exercises at a slightly more advanced level than what feels comfortable.” SO.. those of you already working out at Curves are thinking “the Curves workout and Curves Smart fits the bill exactly” AND IT DOES. If you’re not already a member come on down to take advantage of our summer offer and insure your old age whatever age you are now. Water or Coke? WATER 1. 75% of people in the UK are chronically dehydrated. 2. In 37% of people the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger. 3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%. 4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study. 5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. 6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. 7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. 8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79% and you are 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day? COKE 1. In the US many states highway patrols carry two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. 2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days. 3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. 4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers, rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of aluminium foil dipped in Coca-Cola. 5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. 6. To loosen a rusted bolt apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the bolt for several minutes. 7. To remove grease from clothes empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. FOR YOUR INFORMATION: 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis. 2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a Hazardous Material container reserved for highly corrosive materials! 3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years! SO WATER OR COKE? Business Opportunity: www.team-dynamics.info Fond Farewell to Jenny It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Jenny Wood who is going to university in September to train to be a full-time nurse. Jenny has been a great asset to us here at Curves in Gosport and we will miss her cheeky smile and energy on the circuit. We wish you all the very best in your studies and future career, Jenny. Xxx Race for Life Annaka and Jemma were sponsored recently in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research. Our members have been very supportive and have helped them raise a total of £195 in the club towards a total of £545 in this great cause. Find Curves on Facebook! We thought it was fitting for our first
E-Newsletter to introduce you to our overall Top Achiever, Karen Cook,
whom we nominated as Miss January 2010. “A friend at work told me
about Curves. I had been ill and needed to lose weight and get fit and
healthy, so I joined in August 2007. I really like Curves because it is
such a short exercise time it’s easy to fit in - I go straight from
work. You don’t get bored and there’s no waiting around. Curves has made
such a significant difference to me, more than just losing 5 stone,
9.7% body fat and going from a size 24 to size 12! I am much more
confident with lots more energy. I take more pride in my appearance. I
enjoy shopping now – it used to be outsize shops or nothing, now I have
so much choice! I’m a bit of a shoe-a-holic and now I can get shoes to
fit! The first thing my hubby noticed was that I could walk much further
and I wasn’t out of breath. I have now achieved a high level of pilates
which I couldn’t have done when I was overweight. I will attempt things
now that I wouldn’t have considered before – e.g. ballroom dancing
classes. And I can sit in an aeroplane without touching the sides of the
 seat!”
